The biggest reason more people worldwide rely on Dragon than any other speech recognition system?

IT WORKS - see for yourself.

So how does it work?

It takes most children almost 2 years before they can speak, several more years for them to understand a sizable language vocabulary.
The English language consists of hundreds of thousands of words, each sliced into an average of 5-6 individual sounds called phonemes. Those words are made of noise, vibrations of varying frequencies and amplitudes produced by the larynxes, noses, lungs of myriad people, under many conditions.
To distinguish one sound from another - p from v from t, pay-per-view from paper view or pay preview - requires filtering, parsing, and analysing along multiple dimensions. That is just for one phrase; consider accents, dialect, speed, emotion, pitch, and background noise each play a role in tweaking the signal.
Jim Baker (Dad to Dragon) used math’s to solve the issue, by treating sounds as probabilities. Dragon analyses each new utterance independently, determining the likelihood of which phoneme it might be, by its constituent parts and the sounds that both preceded and followed it.

Breaking down Speech recognition

  • SPEECH- Spoken words enter a microphone.
  • CONVERTED - Audio is processed by the computer's sound card or USB pod and converted from analog to digital signal
  • LANGUAGE MODEL - Software discriminates between lower-frequency vowels and higher-frequency consonants, comparing results with phonemes, the smallest building blocks of speech. Software then compares results to groups of phonemes, and then to actual words, determining likely matches.
  • ACOUSTIC MODEL - Contextual information is simultaneously processed in order to more accurately predict words most likely to be used next, such as the correct choice out of a selection of homonyms such as merry, marry, and Mary. Selected words are arranged in the most probable sentence combinations.
  • TEXT - The sentence is transferred to a word processing application.
